Elected the Sixteenth President of the United States on
November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1861.
Several states had already seceded from the Union, and his presidency was
dominated by the American Civil War. The war was nearing its end when
Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, and died the next day.
Series III includes the massive documentary record of an active president
engaged in leading a nation during wartime.
