Brooklyn was an independent incorporated city under provisions in the New York State Constitution during Abraham Lincoln's lifetime. From 1810 to 1870, Brooklyn's population grew from 8,303 to 419,921. At the start of the Civil War, Brooklyn was third largest city in the United States. It was a major seaport and manufacturing center.
