Winchester, Illinois is the county seat of Scott County. It is located forty-five miles west-southwest of Springfield. When the Illinois General Assembly created Scott County in 1839, it designated Winchester as the county seat. The General Assembly incorporated Winchester as a town in March 1843. In February 1861, the General Assembly extended the corporate boundaries of the town.
