1Charles R. Matheny wrote the document; Abraham Lincoln signed his own name.
2In March 1834, Abraham Lincoln signed a petition requesting the Sangamon County commissioners’ court to establish a road leading from Samuel Musick’s ferry to New Salem and Jacksonville. The court appointed Lincoln and two others to locate the road, and in June 1834 they presented a plan and map of the proposed route to the county commissioners’ court.
