Abraham Lincoln to John M. McCalla, 24 January 18481
Will Mr McCalla please examine these papers, and inform me whether any thing, and if so, what, can
be done in the case?–2
Jany 24. 1848A Lincoln, of HR.2The enclosed papers Lincoln references were not with this letter, and they have not
been found. No docketing accompanies the letter, so few clues exist as to the case
Lincoln mentions, but Lincoln’s other correspondence with John M. McCalla during this
period suggests that Lincoln was assisting one of his constituents in securing back
pay and land warrants for a son or other relative who died in the line of duty during
the Mexican War.
