1Abraham Lincoln wrote this note. Its date is unknown. According to Lincoln’s law partner
William H. Herndon, this slip of paper was kept on top of a stack of documents in the Lincoln & Herndon law office. The editors have dated the document using the beginning and ending dates
of Lincoln’s partnership with Herndon.
