For the relief of J. Throckmorton.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre- sentatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War be, and he hereby is, authorized and directed to audit and adjust the claim of J. Throckmorton against the United States, for any damage or loss sustained by him in consequence of the rescinding of a certain contract on the twentieth August, one thou- sand eight hundred and forty, without any fault and against the wish of the said Throckmorton ; which con- tract was entered into between him and Major McRae, a quartermaster of the army of the United States, on the sixteenth day of August, A. D. one thousand eight hun- dred and forty, who was duly authorized to make the said |

contract; and by the terms of which contract the said Throckmorton, as master of the steamer Chippewa, was required to transport Brigadier General Atkinson, together with eight companies of the infantry of the United States army, from Jefferson Barracks, near St. Louis, to Fort Crawford, in Wisconsin, and to furnish two keel boats of the first class, in addition to the steamer, for the use of the said troops; for which he was to receive as compensation the sum of two hundred dollars per day, to commence on the twenty-first of the same August; and that, upon an adjustment of the said claim, the sum found due to the said Throckmorton, not to exceed one thousand dollars, be paid to him out of any money in the treasury not oth- wise appropriated. |
