Supplementary to “An act for the relief of sick and disabled
seamen,” and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre- sentatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the master of every ship or vessel of the United States, employed in the whale fishery, sailing from any port of the United States after the passage of this act, shall before such ship or vessel shall be admitted to an en- try on her return, render to the collector a true account of the number of seamen that shall have been employed on board such vessel since she was last cleared from any port of the United States, and shall pay to the said collector at the rate of ten cents per month for every seamen so em |

ployed, which the said master or owner shall be, and is hereby, authorized to retain out of the wages or proceeds of the lays or shares of such seamen. Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the money collected by virtue of this act shall be accounted for and paid into the treasury of the United States, and added to the fund for sick and disabled seamen, and expended as part thereof. Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That there be appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not other- wise appropriated, the sum of twenty thousand dollars, for the purchase of a site and the erection of a marine hospi- tal at New Bedford, in the State of Massachusetts, and a further sum of twenty thousand dollars for the purchase of a site and the erection of a marine hospital at New Lon- don, in the State of Connecticut; said sums to be expend- ed, for the purposes aforesaid, under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury. |
