A BILL
For the relief of the grandchildren of Major General Baron De Kalb.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
sentatives of the United States of America in Congress
assembled
, That the amount of seven years’ half pay of
a major general in the army of the Revolution be granted,
in pursuance of the act of Congress of the twenty-fourth
of August, seventeen hundred and eighty, to the grand-
children of Baron De Kalb, a major general in the army
of the Revolution, who, in the battle of Camden, in South
Carolina, “while leading his troops against superior num-
bers, and animating them by his example to deeds of
valor, was pierced with many wounds, and expired in the
forty-eighth year of his age, giving a lasting and glorious

proof of his attachment to the liberties of mankind and
the cause of America.”
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the proper
accounting officers of the treasury be, and they are hereby,
also directed to audit and settle the accounts of the said
Major General Baron De Kalb, for the pay and emoluments
from the date of his commission to the day of his death,
considering him as in command of a separate army from
the day he was appointed by General Washington to the
command of the army ordered to the southward, to the
day on which General Gates took the command of those
forces in North Carolina; in which settlement the account-
ing officers are to conform to the directions contained in
the report and resolution of a Committee of Congress of
the twelfth of May, seventeen hundred and eighty-four, in
relation to the money placed in the hands of General De
Kalb, “for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the
Maryland line on their march to the southward, and for
the purpose of supplying the deficiencies of clothing due
that line.”
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the money
which may be found due under this act shall be paid by
the Treasury Department, out of any unappropriated
money, into the hands of th Minister of France, or the
diplomatic representative of France in the United States

at the time the settlement shall have been made, to be by
him paid over to the grandchildren or immediate descend-
ants of the said Major General Baron De Kalb, in such
proportion as the said grandchildren or immediate descend-
ants may, by the laws of the United States, be entitled,
respectively,
