To provide for bringing home to the united States the remains of the 1 deceased officers & soldiers of our country who were killed in battle or who died in Mexico during the present war.
Whereas by a recent Treaty of Peace agreed upon between this Country and Mexico by the United
states senate, it is, among other things stipulated and agreed that the united States
are to vacate all the Teritory south of the Rio Grande[.] and whereas many of our gallant officers and soldiers (volunteers and Regulars) in the hour of
danger rushed to the thickest of the battle-strife & fought and fell in defence of
their country[’]s rights & honor
and Whereas the voice of Humanity ever alive to human suffering & ever active in commemarateing the deeds of our country[’]s defenders make a solemn appeal to us as the Representatives of that People for whom
they offered up their lives, to see their remains rescued from their Present inhospitable
graves and suitably Honored with Christian burial ^so^ that there remains may be protected by that flag for which they so nobly fought and
died and that their dust may repose in their own land and country. Therefore
