A Bill
For the relief of Major John P. Gaines.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
That the Secretary of the Treasury be and he is hereby directed to pay to Major John P. Gaines, out of any moneys in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of five hundred dollars, it being in payment for his horse and equipments, lost in the public service, by Captain Dan Drake Henrie in making his escape ^in January, 1847,^ from the Mexicans to convey to Gen Taylor information of the approach of General Santa Anna at the head of a large Mexican army.
