To increase the efficiency of the revenue marine.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre- sentatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized, for the better securing the collec- tion of the duties imposed on goods, wares, and merchan- dise, imported into the United States, to cause to be built and equipped six revenue cutters, to wit: one for the station at Portland, Maine, to cruize to Eastport; one for Charleston, South Carolina, to cruize along the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia; one for Key West, Florida, to cruize along the reef; one for New Orleans, to cruize from Ship Islands to Galveston; one for Lake Erie, and one for Lake Ontario. |

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the sum of ninety thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby, ap- propriated, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, to be expended under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury, for the construction and equipment of the revenue cutters authorized by the pre- ceding section. Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That it shall be the duty of the Secretary of the Treasury, before com- mencing the construction of any revenue cutter, to give public notice, for at least thirty days, in two or more public newspapers published at the city of Washington, and in such other papers published at maritime places, where ship building is carried on, as he may deem expe- dient, inviting proposals for furnishing the materials which may be required for the construction of such revenue cutters, and after opening the proposals, such materials shall be purchased from the lowest bidder. |
