A bill to release from duty plank and timber imported for the construction of plank
roads.
Be it enacted &c.
That it shall be lawful for any state, of any company or association formed under
the ^legal^ authority of the
^a^ state, for the purpose of constructing any plank road, within the limits of such
state to import from either of the British North American Provinces any pine plank or timber intended to be applied in the construction of such pla plank road, free of duty, Provided that ^on^ at ^on^ the entry of such plank or timber the state, company or association importing the
same shall execute a bond to the United States, to be approved by the Secretary of
the Treasury, conditioned that said state, company or association shall, within one
year from the date of the importation, lay down and use said plank or timber in the
construction of the plank road (describing the same) for which it shall be intended;
and that in case of default or failure so to lay down and use said plank or timber
within one year, the duty thereon shall be paid to the United states, with interest
from the date of importation.
