Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre- sentatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That there be paid to Peter Parker, secretary of legation and Chinese interpreter at Canton, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, the rate of compensation allowed by law to a charge d’affaires of the United States, for his diplomatic services from the twenty-eighth day of June, eighteen hundred and forty- seven, to the twenty-eight day of June, eighteen hundred and forty-eight, being the interval between the death of Alexander H. Everett, Esq., late commissioner at Canton |

and the probable arrival there of the present commis- sioner, John W. Davis, Esq. Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That there be paid to Jacob L. Martin, late secretary of legation in France, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, the rate of compensation allowed by law to a charge d’affaires of the United States, for his diplomatic services, from the fifteenth day of September, eighteen hundred and forty-six, to the thirty-first of July, eighteen hundred and forty-seven, being the time intervening be- tween the recall of our late minister, Mr. King, and the delivery by Mr. Rush, our present minister, of his cre- dential letter to the King of the French. |
