Mr. John A. Rockwell, from the Committee of Claims, reported
the following bill:
A BILL
To authorize an increase in the number of clerks in the Treasury Department.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Repre-
sentatives of the United States of America in Congress
assembled
, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and
he is hereby, authorized to employ an additional number
of clerks, not exceeding thirteen, in the office of the
Second Auditor of the Treasury, who shall continue until
six months after a treaty of peace shall have been perfect-
ed between the United States and the Republic of Mexico,
the salary of two of who shall not exceed the sum of
one thousand one hundred and fifty dollars each per an-
num, and the salary of the others, each, shall not exceed
the sum of one thousand dollars per annum.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That, in order
to expedite as far as possible the settlement of the accounts
of paymasters of the army of the United States, and the
accounts for arrears of pay of discharged and deceased
officers and soldiers, recruiting officers’ accounts, and the
accounts of captains of companies for company clothing
and equipments, the Second Auditor of the Treasury be,
and he is hereby, authorized to employ for a period of
twelve months, at a daily compensation, not exceeding
three dollars, thirteen additional clerks to be employed ex-
clusively in the settlement of the accounts aforesaid.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the Secretary
of the Treasury be authorized to employ an additional
number of clerks, not exceeding six, in the office of the
Second Comptroller of the Treasury, who shall continue
until six months after a treaty of peace shall have been
perfected between the United States and the Republic of
Mexico, the salary of one of whom shall not exceed the
sum of one thousand one hundred and fifty dollars per an-
num, and the salary of the others, each, shall not exceed
the sum of one thousand dollars per annum.
Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That the Secre-
tary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized to
employ two additional clerks in the Treasury Office, the
salary of one of whom shall be not to exceed the sum of

one thousand four hundred dollars per annum, and the
salary of the other shall be not to exceed the sum of one
thousand two hundred dollars per annum.
Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the Secre-
tary of the Treasury be authorized and directed to provide
such offices and other temporary accommodations as are
rendered necessary by the increase in the number of clerks
as aforesaid; and, in order to carry into effect the pro-
visions of this act, there shall be, and hereby is appropri-
ated out of an moneys in the treasury not otherwise appro-
priated, the sum of thirty-four thousand two hundred and
fifty-seven dollars.
