A bill
To regulate the pay of certain Collectors of the Customs and for other purposes.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress
assembled.
That from and after the 30th day of June 1848. There shall be allowed to the several Collectors of the Customs,
except the necessary expenses incident to their respective offices, for rent, fuel and stationery—under
such limitations as the Secretary of the Treasury may deem reasonable and proper—provided
that ^the provisions of^ this section shall not extend to or affect such Collectors as now receive the maximum for their services now provided by law, and shall not prohibit the Secretary of the Treasury from continuing
to pay for clerks in in the Customs Houses where they have heretofore been employed.

That from and after the 30th day of June
^Sept. r^ 1848—The Inspector at the Port of Petersburg in the State of Virginia shall receive
a Salary of Five hundred dollars per annum, and no more for his services—and that
the Collector of said Port ^of Petersburg and of Newark in the State of N. J.—^ shall receive a Salary of one thousand dollars per annum—and that all fees, fines,
forfeitures and penalties ^paid to them by law,^ of every kind, shall accrue to and be ^paid^ into the Treasury of the United States—and that the Collector of the Port of Salem
in the State of Massachusetts shall from ^& after^ the aforesaid day receive and be entitled to one per cent on the amount of duties
collected by him instead of five eighths per cent as now provided by law.
