That it shall be lawful, hence forward, to make at the mint and its branches, twenty
dollar gold coins of the weight of five hundred and sixteen grains, and gold dollar
coins of the weight of twenty-five grains and eight tenths, which coins shall be legal
tenders of payment according to their nominal values.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the above mentioned coins shall be made in
all respects, in conformity with the existing laws regulating the coinage at the mints,
except that on the reverse of the gold dollar the figure of the eagle shall be omitted.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That in adjusting the weights of gold coins, henceforward, the following deviations from the standard weight shall not be exceeded in any of the single pieces; namely, in the double-eagle, the eagle, and the half-eagle, one half of a grain, and in the quarter-eagle and gold dollar, one quarter of a grain; and that in weighing a large number of pieces together, when delivered from the chief coiner to the Treasurer, and from the Treasurer to the Depositors, the deviations from the standard weight shall not exceed three penny weights in one thousand double- eagles ^two pennies &c^; one and an half penny weights in one thousand half eagles; |
one penny weight in one thousand quarter-eagles; and one half of a penny weight in
one thousand gold dollars;

Sec. 4. And be it further enacted. That so much of this act as regards the coinage
of twenty-dollar and one dollar gold pieces shall continue in force until the fourth
day of March eighteen hundred and fifty one, and no longer.

Resolved, That the Bill from the House of Representatives entitled
“An Act to authorize the coinage of twenty dollar and one dollar gold pieces, at the Mint of the United States and its branches,” do pass, with the following

Amendments:
Strike out all after the enacting clause, except the third section, and insert, immediately after the enacting clause, the following:
That there shall be from time to time, struck and coined ^1^ at the mint of the United States, and the branches thereof, conformably in all respects
to law (except that on the reverse of the gold dollar the figure of the eagle shall
be omitted) and conformably in all respects to the standard for gold coins now established
by law, coins of gold of the following denominations and values, viz; double eagles,
each to be of the value of twenty dollars or units, and gold dollars, each to be of
the value of one dollar or unit.
Section 2. And be it further enacted, That for all ^2^ sums whatever, the double eagle shall be a legal tender for twenty dollars, and the
gold dollar shall be a legal tender for one dollar.
Section 3. And be it further enacted, That all laws ^3^ now in force in relation to the coins of the United States, and the striking and
coining the same, shall, so far as applicable, have full force and effect in relation
to the coins herein authorised, whether the said laws are penal or other-

wise, and whether they are for preventing counterfeiting or debasement, for protecting
the currency, for regulating and guarding the process of striking and coining, and
the preparations therefor, or for the security of the coin, or for any other purpose.
In ^4^ Sec. 3. line 10. After “eagles” insert: two pennyweights in one thousand eagles.
Amend the title of the bill by striking out ^5^ all after the word “coinage”, and inserting of gold dollars and double eagles
