Mr. R. W. Thompson, from the Committee for the District of Columbia, reported the following bill: |
A BILL
To incorporate the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the District of Columbia.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That ^Jno T. Towers, Jno Sessford jr, Y. P. Page, G ^M.^ Dove, W P. Zantzinger, J. H [Granwell?], W. B. Magruder, Levin Jones, M. H. Stephens, L. A. Gobright, J H. Goddard, W. Crawford, S. L. Harris, [ bers of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the District of Columbia, and their successors, be, and they are hereby declared to be, a community, corpora- tion, and body politic, forever, by the name, style, and title of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fel- lows; and by that name they and their successors shall, and may at all times hereafter, be capable, in law, to have, re- ceive, and retain, to them and their successors, property, real and personal; also devises and bequests, of any person, bo- dies corporate or politic, capable of making the same, and the same at their pleasure to transfer or dispose of, in such |

manner as they may think proper: Provided, always, That the said corporation or body politic shall not, at any time, hold or possess property, real, personal or mixed, exceeding in value the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars. |

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the said cor- poration and their successors, by the name and title afore- said, shall be forever hereafter capable in law to sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and be answered unto, defend and be defended, in all or any courts of justice, and before all or any judges, officers, or persons whatsoever, in all and singular actions, matters, or demands, whatever. |

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That it shall and may be lawful for the said corporation to have a common seal for their use, and the same at their will and pleasure to change, alter, and make anew, from time to time, as they may think best, and shall in general have and exercise all such rights, privileges, and immunities, as by law are inci- dent or necessary to corporations of this character, and what may be necessary to the corporation herein constituted, and to enable the members of said order to exercise all things concerning the design of this corporation, for the benevolent relief of the sick and distressed, and for the promotion of their purposes generally: Provided, that nothing herein contained shall be deemed or taken to confer banking privi- leges. |

be lawful, at any time, for the Congress of the United States to demand a statement of the amount of property, real and personal, belonging to said corporation, and of the debts due to and from the said corporation, and the purposes for which disbursements shall have been made, and shall also have the right to authorize one or more persons to inspect such general accounts, in the books of the corporation, as shall relate to such statements. |

Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the Congress of the United States reserves the right to change, alter, or annul this act of incorporation, at any session hereafter. |
