1 | Be it enacted by the Senate and House of |
2 | Representatives of the United States of America |
3 | in Congress assembled, that the accounts of the late Commo= |
4 | dore John Paul Jones with the United States be referred to |
5 | the Secretary of the Treasury, to adjust and pay, out of any |
6 | money or stock of the United States in the treasury not |
7 | otherwise appropriated, upon the principles of justice and |
8 | equity, according to acts in similar cases and applicable |
9 | thereto. |
1 | Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the Secretary |
2 | of the Treasury is hereby instructed to pay to the legal repre= |
3 | sentatives of the said John Paul Jones, and the officers, seamen |
4 | and marines of the squadron under his command being |
5 | citizens of the United States, or their representatives, out of |
6 | any moneys of stock of the United States in the treasury not |
7 | otherwise appropriated, their respective proportions of the value, as estimated by Benjamin |
8 | Franklin, of three prizes captured by the squadron under the |
9 | command of the said Jones, and delivered up to Great Britain |
10 | by Denmark, in seventeen hundred and seventy-nine; to be |
11 | apportioned on the basis of the distribution of a settlement |
12 | made with ^the captors^, fro prizes captured by, the said squadron, and |
13 | received from the Court of France, and confirmed by Congress |
14 | in seventeen hundred and eighty-seven; ^[^the said proportion |
16 | to be deducted from the indemnity to be received from |
17 | Denmark, in satisfaction of the loss sustained in the three |
