BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
THATthe Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized to make any arrangement or compromise with Mangle M. Quackenboss and his co-obligors, or with any or either of them, for or on account of any claim or claims of the United States against them, the said Mangle M. Quackenboss and his co-0bligors, on bond or bonds given by him or them as sureties of Samuel Swartwout, late collector of the customs for the port of New York, for the faithful performance of the duties of such office, and to release him or them from all such claim or claims on said bond or bonds, upon such terms as the said secretary may deem proper and most conducive to the best interests of the United States: Provided, That such arrangement and release of one surety shall not operate to discharge or release any co-surety or co-sureties, or the said late collector, from said claim or claims.
