BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
THATthe President of the United States, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, be, and he hereby is, authorized to appoint twelve assistant pursers in the navy, whose compensation shall be five hundred dollars while on furlough or waiting orders, seven hundred and fifty dollars while on shore duty, and one thousand dollars while on sea service.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That said assistant pursers, thus appointed, shall be subject in all respects to the laws, rules and regulations of the naval service, and, before entering upon the duties of their office, give bond satisfactory to the Secretary of the Navy in a sum not less than ten thousand dollars.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That from and after two years from the passage of this act, all appointments of pursers in the navy shall be made from said corps of assistant pursers.

Sec 4. And be it further enacted the applicants for appointment under the provisions of this act shall be examined by a board of examiners to be appointed by the Secretary of the Navy, who shall certify to the capacity and qualifications of Said applicant or applicants, for the proper performance of the duties to be assigned ^to^ them.
