1 BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representa-
2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
3 THATthere shall be appointed, in the man=
4 ner provided in the second section of the
5 act entitled “An act to promote the
6 progress of useful arts, and to repeal
7 all act and parts of acts heretofore
8 made for that purpose,” approved July
9 fourth, eighteen hundred and thirty six,
10 two principal examiners and two assis=
12 tant examiners, in addition to the num=
13 ber of examiners now employed in the
14 Patent Office; and that hereafter each
15 of the principal examiners employed
16 in the Patent Office shall receive
17 an annual salary of twenty-five
18 hundred dollars, and each of the
19 assistant examiners an annual sal=
20 ary of fifteen hundred dollars. ^Provided^
1 Sec. 2 And be it further enacted,
2 That hereafter the Commissioner of
3 Patents shall require a fee of one
4 dollar for recording any assignment,
5 grant, or conveyance, of the whole or
6 any part of the interest in letters
7 patent, or power of attorney, or license
8 to make or use the things patented,
9 when such instrument shall not

10 exceed three hundred words; the sum
11 of two dollars when it shall exceed
12 three hundred and shall not
13 exceed one thousand words; and the
14 sum of three dollars when it shall
15 exceed one thousand words; which
16 fees shall in all cases be paid in
17 advance; ^[“^and he shall also require
18 to be paid a fee of five cents per
19 volume for examining the records
20 of the Patent Office.^”]^
1 Sec. 3 And be it further enacted,
2 ^[“That there &c^That the Commission of Patents is
3 hereby authorized to appoint^”]^ two clerks,
4 to be employed in copying and recording,
5 and in other services in the Patent
6 Office, who shall each be paid a
7 salary of one thousand two hundred
8 dollars per annum.
Sec. 4 And be it further enacted,
That the Commissioner of Patents is
hereby authorized to send my mail, free
of postage, the annual reports of the
Patent Office, in the same manner in
which he is empowered to send letters
and packages relating to the business
of the Patent Office.
