BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled,
THAT^[^ the proper accounting officer of the treasury do examine and ascertain, upon evidence
to be exhibited to him by Samuel Grice, the value of certain live oak timber which
the said Grice, in the year eighteen hundred and thirty-six, had at the mouth of the
Halifax river, (or near the same,) on the coast of Florida, there taken, to be carried
thence and delivered under a contract between said Grice and the Navy Department;
and which delivery was prevented by the intervention of part of the military force,
and the same thus lost to said Grice.–^]^
^[^Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the value of said timber be so ascertained
at the place aforesaid, in the month of March, in the year eighteen hundred and thirty-six;
and the amount so found, be paid to said Samuel Grice, out of any money in the treasury
not otherwise appropriated.–^]^

Amendment
Strike out all after the enacting clause and insert the following
“That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed
to pay, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, such amount of
damages as, from the testimony furnished shall appear to have been sustained by Samuel
Grice, in consequence of the seizure of his boat by an officer of the United States
Army in the year eighteen hundred and thirty six, so far as said damages have not
arisen from the negligence of Said Grice”
