BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled,
THATthere shall be reserved from sale in the State of Florida a quantity of land equal
to one thirty sixth part of the lands covered by confirmed Spanish grants within the
said State of Florida, to be selected under the direction of the governor of said
State, out of any public lands remaining unsold in the said State of Florida, in sections,
half sections, quarter sections, or previously defined fractions; which lands, when
so selected, as aforesaid, shall vest in the State of Florida for the use of the inhabitants
in the several townships in which they may be located for the support of schools within
said State, to be holden by the same tenure, and upon the same terms and conditions,
in all respects, as the said State now holds the lands heretofore reserved for the
use of schools in said State, and for the benefit of the same persons who would have
enjoyed the advantage of the same, had there been no interfering grants.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That in all cases in which the sixteenth section
of any township in said State, whether the said township shall have been divided

into sections or not, shall be found to be valueless by reason of its being barren
or inundated, or from any other cause, and equivalent quantity of land may be selected
in lieu thereof, under the direction of the governor of said State, out of any public
lands remaining unsold in the same land district, subject to the same uses, as provided
in the act of March third, eighteen hundred and forty five, entitled “An act supplemental
to the act for the admission of Florida and Iowa into the Union, and for other purposes.”
