BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled,
[THATthe next term of the Supreme Court of the United States, and also the term thereof,
by law appointed to be held on the first Monday of December, one thousand eight hundred
and forty nine, shall continue for the despatch of business, until the first Monday
of July next after the commencement of the said terms respectively, unless the business
of the said court shall be sooner disposed of; and, in order to enable the judges
to give their undivided attention to the business of the said court, they shall not
be obliged to attend any circuit courts which shall be held during the said two terms
of the Supreme Court; but the said judges, if, in their judgment the public interest
or their own convenience shall render it proper, may adjourn over during each of the
said two terms from the last saturday in March, to any day not later than the first
Monday of May thereafter.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That no writ of error or appeal shall lie to or
be taken from the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of

Columbia, unless the matter in dispute exclusive of costs shall exceed the value of
two thousand dollars.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the second section of the act approved the
seventeenth day of June, one thousand eight hundred and forty four, entitled “An act
concerning the Supreme Court of the United States,” be, and the same is hereby, repealed.
Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That this act shall take effect and be in force
from and immediately after its passage].
