1 BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representa-
2 tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
3 THATthe proper accounting officers of the
4 Treasury be, and they are hereby, authorized
5 to settle and adjust the account of the late
6 William A. Slacum, deceased, and to pay to
7 his personal representative, in addition
8 to what Mr Slacum received in his life-
9 time, his ^[actual^ charges for ^]^ expenses incurred
10 in visiting the Columbia river, in pursuance
11 of the directions of the Secretary of State,
12 in the years eighteen hundred and
13 thirty six and eighteen hundred and
14 thirty seven: Provided, The amount allowed
15 in such expenses shall not exceed the
16 sum of seven hundred and twelve dollars
17 and ninety cents; ^[^and also to pay his
said representative, as compensation
for the services rendered to the United
States by Mr Slacum on that mission, at
the rate of six dollars per diem, com-
mencing from the first day of June,
eighteen hundred and thirty-sex,
and continuing to the fifteenth day
of March, eighteen hundred and
thirty seven: Provided, however, That the
amount of pay received by Mr Slacum
as a purser on the navy of the United
States, during the period of time embraced
