BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled, THATthe fourth clause of section seven of an act, entitled “An act to enable the people
of Wisconsin Territory to form a constitution and State government and for the admission
of such State into the Union,” approved August sixth, eighteen hundred and forty-six,
be, and the same is hereby, so altered and modified, as to allow and enable the said
State of Wisconsin to select, under the authority of the legislature thereof, seventy-two,
sections of the government lands lying within said State, in any legal subdivisions,
not less than quarter sections, in lieu of the seventy-two sections granted to said
State by said act in connexion with Salt Springs; and that, when so selected, said
lands may be disposed of, or used for such purpose, and on such terms, as the legislature
of such State may deem proper; Provided, That the same be Sold at not less than the
minimum price of the public lands; that such selection shall in no case interfere
with the right of pre-emption of any person resident upon any of the said public lands,
nor upon any lands reserved by the United States for military or other purposes, nor
upon lands not surveyed and not subject to private entry at the minimum price: And
provided further, That such selection shall be made within one year after the passage
of this act.
