BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled,
THAT the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby directed to pay interest upon the advances
made by the State of Alabama, for the use of the United States government, in the
suppression of hostilities by the Creek Indians in eighteen hundred and thirty-six,
and eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, at the rate of six per centum per annum from
the time of the advance until the principal sum was paid by the United States to the
State of Alabama; and the sum so found to be due to said State be paid out of any
money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.

Resolved That the Bill from Senate (No. 351) entitled “An Actauthorizing the payment of interest upon the advances made by the State of Alabama
for the use of the United States Government, in the suppression of the Creek Indian
hostilities of 1836 and 1837, in Alabama. do pass with the following
Amendment
Add the following Section.
“Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That in ascertaining the amount of interest as
aforesaid due to the State of Alabama, the following rules shall govern:
That the interest shall not be computed on any sum which Alabama has not expended
for the use and benefit of the United States as evidenced by the amount refunded or
repaid to the State of Alabama by the United States:–
Second, That no interest shall be paid on any sum on which the said State of Alabama
did not either pay or lose interest as aforesaid.”
