A JOINT RESOLUTION
For the relief of Alexander Hunter.

Be it resolved by the Senate and House of Repre- sentatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the proper accounting officer of the Treasury Department audit and settle, upon principles of justice and equity, the account of Alexander Hunter, mar- shal of the District of Columbia, for the commitment, maintenance, and releasement, to, in, and from the jails of Washington, in the District of Columbia, of persons com- mitted thereto; and any balance or settlement found in his favor shall be paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated: Provided, That, in settling said account, not more than twenty-five cents per day shall be allowed for keeping and dieting any runaway slave; |

and in all cases in which the said marshal shall have received from the master of any slave, or other person, any compensation for his or her safe-keeping, or might have legally demanded and secured to himself indemnity or payment for the commitment, maintenance, and release- ment of any person committed to his custody, in all such cases no compensation shall be allowed: And provided, further, That, on such settlement, no allowance shall be made for feeding or maintaining any runaway slave, or other person, after the time when said marshal could, by any official act of his, have legally directed or obtained his dis- charge. |
