A Joint Resolution to authorise the Survey of Certain routes for a Canal or rail road between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress assembled.

That the President of the United States be authorised and requested to cause accurate surveys to be made of the Country access the Isthmus between Chaques and Panama in reference to the construction of a ship canal or rail road to facilitate the communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans with estimates of the expense of constructing such works. Also that he cause such survey, and examinations to be made of other proposed lines of Communication across the isthmus between the two oceans as he may deem expedient. Also such examinations and surveys of a route for a rail road or [Common?] road from such points on the Mississippi or its branches ^or the gulf of Mexico^ to such points on the Pacific ocean by he may deem expedient. And that he be authorised to employ in perpetuity said surveys, such portion of the Engineer and other Corps of the Army and such portion of the naval force as may be advantageously be employed and

that the sum of one hundred Thousand dollars be appropriated for the purpose aforesaid to be expended under the direction of the Secretary of War.
