Resolved by the senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America
in Congress assembled that the President of the United States be and he is hereby
authorized—by and with the ^advice and^ consent of the Senate—^“^to appoint a Geologist to accompany the Navy and Army officers who have been appointed
to examine the coast of California and Oregon^”^ for the purpose of reporting on the proper places for forts, Dock yards, Light Houses,
&c. The said Geologist shall be allowed a salary of three
^two^ thousand dollars per Annum. The necessary outfit to be supplied by the War and Navy
Departments
