Mr. Atchison, from the Committee on Indian Affairs, submitted a report, (No. 40,) accompanied by the following joint resolution: which was read, and passed to a second reading.

A JOINT RESOLUTION
For the relief of Jonathan Lewis.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representa-
tives of the United States of America in Congress assem-
bled, That the United States agent for the Cherokee Indi-
ans be authorized and required to take and receive the evi-
dence of property forcibly taken, stolen, or destroyed, from
Jonathan Lewis by Cherokee Indians, half-breeds or white
men, belonging to said tribe or other tribes of Indians,
whilst he, the said Lewis, was a resident among said In-
dians, between the years eighteen hundred and thirty-nine
and eighteen hundred and forty-three, and that said agent
forward to the Secretary of War such evidence. It shall
be the duty of the Secretary of War, when such evidence
shall be received by him, to examine the same, and ascer-
tain the value of the property lost by said Lewis as afore-
said, and to pay over to the said Lewis the value of the

property so lost, and that the sum of fifteen hundred dol-
lars be appropriated for the purpose aforesaid out of any
money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated.

Add to the end of the Bill Provided the Agent in taking the testimony above authorized be required to notify the Indian authorities of the time & place of taking such evidence & the sum paid to said Lewis shall be deducted from the annuities of the said Indian tribes.
