Sec[Section] 1
Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in the general assembly that clerks of the county commissioners Court in the several counties in this state shall not hold their said offices for a longer term period than two years from the time of their appointment ^to office unless reappointed^ or until their successor shall be qualified anything in former laws to the contrary notwithstanding2
Sec 2
That the clerks of county commissioners court in the several Counties now in office shall hold thier said offices until the first Monday in September ^march^ in the year one thousand eight hundred and five ^thirty^ ^thirty five ^ at which time or as soon thereafter as practicable and biennially thereafter it shall be the duty of the county commissioners court of the several counties in this state to fill said such vacancies with such person as to them may appear most suitable
Sec 3
Said Clerks when thus appointed shall be subject to the same liabilities and performance the same duties as is now required by law
Nothing in this act contained shall be so construed as to prevent said courts at any time for good cause to be spread upon the records from removing ^from^ office any such Clerk from office

1Calvin Tunnel introduced HB 18 in the House of Representatives on December 9, 1834. On December 11, the House passed the bill by a vote of 44 yeas to 10 nays, with Abraham Lincoln voting yea. On December 16, the Senate referred the bill to the Committee on the Judiciary. The bill did not become law.
