Com.[Committee] on Finance
1John D. Whiteside introduced HB 56 in the House of Representatives on December 27, 1834. On December 29, the House referred it to a select committee.
On December 31, the select committee reported back the bill with an amendment, in
which the House concurred. On January 2, 1835, the House referred the bill to a Committee
of the Whole House as a special order of the day for January 5. On January 5, the
House tabled the bill by a vote of 32 yeas to 21 nays, with Abraham Lincoln voting yea. The House resumed consideration on January 30. The House refused to
to amend the bill by striking out the sum “800,” and inserting “1000” for the salary
of the secretary of state by a vote of 11 yeas to 39 nays, with Lincoln voting nay.
The House passed the bill, amending the title by striking out the word “and” before
the word “Treasurer,” and adding the words “and Secretary of State.” On February
7, the Senate declined to read the bill a third time.
