1James M. Strode introduced SB 38, originally titled “A Bill to Amend an Act titled 'An Act to Prevent Trespassing on the Canal Lands of this State,’” in the Senate on December 21, 1835. On December 23, the Senate referred the bill to the Committee on the Judiciary. On January 2, 1836, the Committee on the Judiciary reported back the bill with an amendment, in which the Senate concurred. On January 4, the Senate passed the bill as amended, amending the title so as to read “A Bill to Authorize Commissioners of the Illinois and Michigan Canal to Sell Stone Off the Canal Lands.” On January 9, the House of Representatives referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on January 13 with amendments, which the House approved before passing the bill as amended on January 14. The House informed the Senate of the amended bill’s passage, but the Senate did not take up the House amendments.
