AN ACT authorizing Williston T. Reed to establish a ferry at Newport on the Ohio river, and for other purposes.

Duties.
Sec.General Assembly[Section] 1. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the , That John McIntire, Alexander Douglass and John Henley be, and they are hereby appointed commissioners to view, mark and locate a state road from Thomas F. Anderson’s in Pope county, to Newport on the Ohio river, having a due regard in said location to a direct line, and the convenience of the citizens in the neighborhood in which said road is to pass.

To take an oath
To report to the county commissioners.
Road to be opened and kept in repair.
Sec. 2. The said commissioners or any two of them, shall meet at the house of Thomas F. Anderson in Pope county on the first Monday in April, or in sixty days thereafter, and being first duly sworn before some justice of the peace faithfully to discharge the duties required of them by this act, shall proceed to view, mark and locate said road. The said commissioner shall make a report in writing to the county commissioners as soon as said road is located, and said report shall form a part of the record of the said court, and said road thus laid out, shall be a state road, and opened and kept in repair as other state roads.
Ferry established.
Sec. 3. As soon as said road is opened, Williston T. Reed is hereby authorized to establish a ferry at Newport across the Ohio river, Provided however, There shall be nothing herein so construed as to interfere with any road or ferry, that the county commissioners have established heretofore; this act to be in force from and after its passage.

1On February 13, 1837, William J. Gatewood introduced SB 202 in the Senate as “An Act to Reduce the Pay of members of the Legislature, and to Correct Extravagant Disbursements of the Public Money.” On February 21, the Senate referred it to a select committee. The committee reported back the next day and recommended an amendment, to which the Senate concurred. On February 23, the Senate passed the bill. On the suggestion of John D. Whiteside, the title of the bill was changed to “An act authorizing Williston T. Reed, to establish a ferry at New Port, on the Ohio River, and for other purposes.” On March 1, the House passed the bill without further amendment. On March 3,Council of Revision approved the bill, and the act became law.
