Dear Sir,
The passage of the act a few days since regulating the Compensation of Postmasters, and requiring a re-adjustment of their accounts since the passage of the act of 1847, requires the Postmaster General to appoint the number of clerks necessary to perform the service, but makes no appropriation for their payment.
The Auditor reports to me that four additional Clerks will be necessary for Six months, at the rate of $1000 peryear for ^that^

that service.
I respectfully recommend that the Sum of Two Thousand Dollars be added to the appropriation bill for their payment.
I am, Respectfully
Your Obdt Servant,
C Johnson
Postmaster General.
Hon. W. L. Goggin, Chairman, Com. of P. Off & P. Roads House of Reps
