Sec[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly, That James H. C. Hanna, of Pope county, and he is hereby permitted to use the skeleton of an unknown colored person who
was found dead in said county, for the purpose of anatomical study. And the said Hanna shall not be liable for
so doing to the provisions of the one hundred and thirty-eighth section of the criminal
code. This act to be in force from and after its passage.

1On January 24, 1839, John W. Read in the House of Representatives presented the petition of James H. C. Hanna, which the House referred to a select committee. In response to this petition, Read
of the aforesaid select committee introduced HB 257 in the House on February 4. The
House passed the bill on February 13. On February 26, the Senate refused to read the bill a second time.
