An act supplementaly to an “act Entitled “an act concerning Judgements and Executions, approved January 17th 1825 Sec. 1st Be it enacted by the people of the state of Illinois represented in The General assembly, That Every person being the head of a family and living with it, and whose known occupation for the support and maintainance of his family, is farming, shall be permitted to retain and enjoy exempt from execution in addition to what he is permitted to retain and enjoy under the 19th section of the act to which this is a supplement, one work horse, one pair of [Gearing?] or harness, and one plough; and every person being the [ and also being the head of a family and living with it and who persues his trade or mechanical art for the support and maintaince of his family, shall be permitted to retain and enjoy exempt from execution, in addition to what he is per mitted to retain and enjoy, under the aforesaid 19th section mechanical tools, suitable to ^the^ kind of trade or mechanical art, he may have and pursue, to the amount of one hundred dollars, and if any sheriff or other officer shall take or seize and of the said articles of personal property, he shall become liable, as in the manner provided in the said 19th section of the act, to which this a supplement. provided. that nothing in this act [contains?] shall be so construed as to exempt any horse, except such as it kept for ordinary farm- ing purposes, or to exempt from execution, the tools of any mechanic, unless he shall persue his trade or mechanical art with ordinary diligense and industry. |

1Jesse M. McCutchen introduced HB 108 in the House of Representatives on January 7, 1839. The House referred the bill to the Committee on Manufactures
and Agriculture. The Committee on Manufactures and Agriculture reported back the
bill on January 10 with amendments, and the House referred the bill and proposed amendments
to a select committee. The select committee reported back the bill on January 14
with a substitute, and the House referred the bill and proposed substitute to the
Committee of the Whole. The Committee of the Whole did not report back the bill.
