Sec[Section] 1 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Illinois represented in the General Assembly, That every person who shall after the passage of this act, cut, fell, box, bore,
or destroy, or carry away any Hickory tree, shade tree or, fruit tree or sapling standing
or growing upon land belonging to any other person or persons without having first
obtained permission so to do, shall forfeit and pay for every such tree or sapling
so felled, cut, boxed[,] bored, destroyed[,] or carried away, the sum of Eight dollars to be recovered in like manner as is provided
in the second section of the act whereunto this act is an addition

1James H. Woodworth introduced SB 48 in the Senate on December 30, 1839. The Senate passed the bill on January 18, 1840. On January
25, the House of Representatives referred the bill to a select committee. The select committee reported back the
bill on January 30 with an amendment, in which the House concurred. The House passed
the bill as amended. The House reported the bill’s passage and amendment to the Senate,
but the latter took no action on the House amendments.
