The Postmaster General has received your letter enclosing one from the Postmaster
at Dixon, Illinois, in relation to increasing his compensation, and requesting the
favorable
action of Congress on the subject, and directs me to inform you in reply that it is out of his power to afford Mr Birdsall (P. M. at Dixon) the relief he asks, as the commissions of Postmasters are
regulated and fixed by law, and the Department has no power to change it.
Mr Birdsalls letter, and statement of the business of his office, are herewith returned.
