I have the honor to inform you, in reply to your letter of the 27th ult. that, it appears, Capt Lamoth transported ^the mail^ from Alton, Ill. to St Louis, Mo. in Steam Boat, from 1st April to 17th of May 1845. His service during that period was recognized, on the 6th of June 1846, and referred to the Auditor of the Treasury for the Post Office Department
to adjust and pay at the rate of $1000 per annum.
Daily four horse coach service from Alton to St Louis began, as it appears of record, on the 4th of Jan. 1847.
