Sir:
Your note of the 7th inst enclosing an application from Mr John McCollister of Carmichaels Pa, for compensation for conveying the mail on route 1637, from 1 July to 30th Septr 1846, has been referred to this branch of the Department for investigation, by the Postmaster General.
In answer I have to inform you that Mr Jno. McAllister ^of Butler Pa^ was the contractor for that period, and received pay for the same, no evidence of Mr McCollister’s having performed the service for the first quarter of the contracts term having been received by the Department at that time.
Mr McCollister, having now forwarded positive evidence of performance of

service by him and Mr McAllister still being a contractor on another route, it is presumed the question can be adjusted by the Department.
Mr McAllister is advised of the claim made by Mr McCollister. When his answer is received the matter will be disposed of by a decision of the P. M. Gl
I have the honor to be very respectfully
