To the Congress of the United States.
We the undersigned Citizens of the Country of Union and State of Arkansas, would humbly represent, that this county was settled up in the last two years with a very inteligent and industrious population, perhaps unparaleled in the history of emigration, but are deprived of mail facilities. We therefore cordially join the Citizens of the state of Louisiana in petitioning your honorable body to grant us a mail rout, to run from El’ Dorado, in Union County, via Harpers, and Foster’s Store on to James Dyer’s and thence to Athens, the seat of Justice for Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, a distance of fifty four miles, establishing post-offices at at, Harper’s, Foster’s Store, and Dyer’s.
We would further represent that all letters and papers from Nachitoches or Harrisonburg would reach us much sooner than they do one the present rout, which carries them from Athens to Minden, thence to Washington in Hempstead County, Arks, thence to Camden, thence to Campeynolle and from thence to El’ Dorado, a distance of near two hundred miles, whilst they might be conveyed through the above named rout, a distance of only fifty four miles.
We your petitioners, as in duty bound will every pray &c
