To the Honourable the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in
Congress Assembled
16 Jany
We the undersigned citizens of the State of Louisiana with respect represent to your
Honourable body that we are in great need of a new mail rout from Harrisonburg in
the Parish of Catahoula to Athens in the Parish of Claiborn, one hundred and ten miles
on which we wish the mail to pass once a week and back
We would respectfully represent unto your Honourable body that the mail should pass
on said Rout from Harrisonburg by Copenhagen Thos Merideths James Williams Vernon Dagdemonia to Athens the seat of Justice of Claiborn Parish
We would further represent to your honourable body that the above rout is of Vast
interest to a new growing and prosperous section of Country the citizens the citizens of which are in a great measure ^deprived^ of mail facilities, many of them haveing to go twenty, thirty, forty & even fifty miles to their nearest post office All
of which facts may be acertained by reference to a map of the country over which this rout must necessarily pass
It is no objection to this rout to say that a mail passes already the said road from
Harrisonburg to Copenhagen because it is a matter notorious to every person ^on^ that part of the rout that the mail passes from Harrisonburg to Monroe but one a
week & that the mail matter accumulates at Harrisonburg to such an enormous size that
it is frequently impossible for the bags to carry all at a time in consequence depriveing the citizens on the rout herein asked for nearly a month & perhaps longer of their
mail facilities
We therefore would respectfully pray your honourable body to pass an act establishing
the above designated rout
We would further respectfully represent to your Honourable body that in the rout herein
prayed for there is a good well beaten road & that ^the^ rout as designated is nearly on a strait forward course passing by the Post Office at Vernon which is the seat of Justice
of and Dugdemonia both in Jackson Parish & each of which is supplied by cross routs
at considerable expence & Your petitioners will evr pray &c
R A Carson Post Master at Vernon |
