To the Honorable The Congress of the United States
The undersigned citizens of the counties of Barry and Eaton in the state of Michigan would respectfully represent that a Mail route is much needed from Hastings in the County of Barry to Michigan the new seat of Government of said state, in the County of Ingham, that a large proportion of the Inhabitants of the said Counties of Barry and Eaton labour under serious Embarrassments for want of Mail facilities; having no direct communication with said seat of Government That Hastings the most Westerly point, and distant Forty miles, from the seat of Government; is the shire Town of the County of Barry; that the intermediate Country is well settled by an Industrious and Enterprising People; that the Roads will warrant the ready transmission of a Mail; that it interests a larger proportion of the Inhabitants than any similar route that has been Established since the first ^settlement^ of this portion of the Interiour of Michigan a large proportion of the Inhabitants on said route have long been Compelled to transact their Post Office business from Ten to Twenty miles distant from their residence; We would therefore in view of the foregoing facts; Respectfully and Earnestly solicit your Honorable Body to pass a law Establishing a Mail Route from Hastings in the County of Barry to Vermontville; thence through Wheatons settlement; in the Town of Chester, thence to Hoveys settlement; in the Town of Benton, and thence for Fourteen miles to the seat of Government by the most Eligible route as your Honorable Body may deem proper and right.
