To the Hon Senate and house of Representatives of the United States,
The undersigned citizens of the city of Mobile beg leave to suggest the Great advantages which would accrue to themselves and to a Great portion of the citizens of the state of Ala by establishing a tri weekly mail from this city to Cahawba or selma on the Ala river. If the mail be carried by water two small steamboats will be sufficient. This mail will supply the counties of Washington, Clarke, Marengo, Dallis, Wilcox, and Monroe, in connection with the cross mails already establishedThe counties above discribed are several of them the most wealthy in the state and by the present mail arrangment are almost as distant from us in point of mail communication as the city of New York, In the winter season it is almost impossible to carry a mail by land to the named counties in consequence of the many bad creeksThis route would also be the safest and quickest to carry the mails from here to Sumter, Green, Perry, Tuskaloosa, Pickens and Fayette counties ala and also to the North Eastern part of Miss
For further particulars on this subject we beg leave to refer your honors to our Representative in congress the Hon John Gayle
