A description of the Honeyage and part of the Gennessee valies.
Near the mouth of the Honeyage valey is a noted landing place for lumber denominated
the shingle house There is one store and probably there is some millions of feet of
lumber rafted in at this place for Pittsburgh market every spring It ^is^ about 16 miles from Olean on the Post road leading from that place to Cauders post
the county seat of Potter From this place to the Honey^age^ forks is betwen 6 and 7 miles and in the distance there is 6 saw mills on the main
creek and two on a branch that comes in at the forks as the place is called At this
place is a store and it is quite a centeral place for business It is eight miles to
Bolivar Post Office. At each of the mills alluded to there is a huddle of from two
to five families besides farmers living on the road The mills all do a good business
some a heavy business and are capable of cutting from one to two millions of feet
in a year
From the forks to the uper mill on the stream is 5 miles from which place to the mouth
the creek is a lawful public highway There are 6 mills in the distance about the main
stream and its branches some propeled by water and some by steam the most of which
are doing a fair business. People talk of putting up some steeam mill back from the
stream another season The valey above the forks is seattled about as it ^is^ below
Near the uper mill is a road leading off south to a new settlement of something over
fifty families Their nearest Post Office is at Bolivar or Wellsville a distance averaging
about 15 miles
<Page 3>
on the summit about 4 miles from the last mentioned mill is another road to the same
settlement. It ^is^ but about four years since the settlement commenced There is also another road from
the settlement to the river above McCay’s mill which place is from two to three miles from the summit before mentioned
About this ^mill^ is a considerably dense population At the North and east the country has been settled
considerable time and and the people are forward in improvements At the South and West the county is new and
the settlem[?] ^is^ fast increasing They are dependent on McCays mill for their grinding in that direction for ten or twelve miles There is a
Store near the mill. From this place to Wellsville about 8 miles there is a road on
both sides of the river the most of the way inhabited by farmers There are also some
saw mills on the river doing a good business.
In connection with this description is a kind of rude map but sufficiently correct
to show where the mail rout runs around us and dotted line will show the contemplated
rout from the Shingle house to Wellsville
We believe the above description to be assentially correct
