To the Senate & House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress
assembled.
The petition of the undersigned citizens of Jasper & Butts, Counties, Georgia, respectfully
sheweth that there is great want of mail facilities at Seven Islands, on the Ocmulgee
River, & in that vicinity, there being no post-office nearer than the Indian Springs,
distant seven miles, west, and Monticello, Ten miles East. That there is located at
Seven Islands, a large cotton manufactory, which is daily growing in importance. That
the population at Seven Islands numbers about Two hundred persons, & the surrounding
country is densely populated. That within a mile are extensive Flouring Mills. We
therefore request that the mail route from Madison, on the Georgia Rail-road to Monticello,
may be extended to Griffin, on the Macon & Western Rail-road, via, Seven Islands,
Indian Springs, Jackson &c. to run through three times a week, and back, so as to
give three mails a week from Madison, and the same number from the city of Griffin.
We suggest that the mail be conveyed in two-horse-hacks, and we solicit the establishment
of a post-office at Seven Islands, to be known by that name. And your petitioners
will ever pray &c.
