To the honorable Cave Johnson Postmaster Generalof the United States
Watertown Jany 1 1847Mr J B B HaleSir
Jan 1st
The subscribers citizens of Washington County Ohio would respectfully suggest the
necessity of a new mail route from Waterford to Barlow both in Washington County passing
through Watertown ^& stoping at the P.O. in Watertown^ to the post office in said Barlow and back once in each week. This arrangement would
furnish the citizens of the townships of Watertown and Barlow with two or three days
earlier inteligence and also it is beleived would increase the quantity of mail matter
for these two offices and promote the general inteligence of the community under the
present arrangement a large portion of the mail matter for these two Offices remain
at McConnelsville or Marietta untill the weekly mail from those points bring it forward.
The distence of the proposed route is twelve miles which could be carried for fifty
Dollars or less We think the income of the two offices will pay the [...?] expences of the proposed route. We would propose that the mail start from Waterford
Wednesday morning & return in the afternoon (if they have a daily mail from Zanesville
to Marietta) if not then to have it carried on Tuesday or Thursday. All of which is Respectfully submitted
